In modern urban areas, it’s really a difficult job to find a house complete with a beautiful garden right in front of the house. In fact, people staying in high-rise apartments often even lack a backyard where they can try their hands in gardening. This however doesn’t keep folks from wanting courtyards, patio ideas, or a green space of their own. So should everyone in urban areas be at a loss for the bliss of gardening? Shall they lie back in ‘vacant or pensive mood’ and think about their vegetable creations they can’t have? The answer to this is no. These people can still pursue gardening in potted plants or grow plants in containers. This form of gardening, also known as container gardening, is increasingly gaining acceptance among modern urban people.
People, no matter of their age or space can afford to do gardening in containers. Don’t worry if you live in a small and cramped apartment but don’t have your own space for gardening and landscaping ideas. Select the right containers and plants suited to them and place them at convenient points in your home be it the balcony, terrace or deck and there you go. You have your own small garden. This small piece of greenery can instantly perk up the ambience of your house and make it a much more elegant place to live.
There are many advantages of having a container garden. The very first of them is that you don’t need to have a lot of space. Secondly, no matter what type of soil you might have in your place, you can grow any type of plant by putting suitable soil in the pots. Another important advantage is that a container gardener wouldn’t have to spend a huge amount of time weeding or digging up soil. On top of that, trimming and managing the outgrowths of plants become very easy. A pathway to the main door or balcony lined with pots of different plants with flowers look brilliant indeed! Even those having conventional gardens keep containers of different shapes, colors planted with blooming plants to give an unique outlook to the their garden.
The type of material of containers is dependant on the climate and the type of plants you want to grow. Pots made of different materials like plastic, terracotta, plain clay, glass and wood are available. Each has its own characteristics as well as pros and cons. For example plastic pots may be cheap and retain water; however they don’t look attractive. Terracotta and clay pots are great for garden and landscaping plans and come in various designs; however in extreme cold climate they tend to crack and in heat, they evaporate quickly. In comparison, wooden pots are better. They don’t crack and give more insulation. They are plastic-lined to retard their decay. Whatever be the kind of pots that you choose make sure that you have ample holes in the pots to facilitate water drainage.
Container gardening helps to ensure that potted plants have fewer disease organisms, weeds, and other pests. Still, soil should be replenished with nutrients by adding fertilizers at regular intervals and you should never use soil directly from the garden. Both lack of water and excess watering is harmful for plants. Therefore as a container gardener you need to ensure optimum watering of plants. You should also plant those plants which you can manage easily.
A container garden can be a great choice for people living in small apartments and having a hectic schedule. It can also allow you to fulfill your green urge and at the same time you can do it with very little maintenance hassle.
